Honestly, since writing this post, I ended up souring slightly on Season 1 at the end. Without getting spoilery, I just didn’t feel like it stuck the landing in its last couple episodes or so. Berlanti’s shows are at their best when a season has a great villain to play off of (Flash Season 1, Arrow Seasons 1-2), and not as good without it. Supergirl gave us a couple good villains, but never a great one, and I felt like that showed at the end.

Nevertheless, I’m also quite hopeful for a Season 2. Like you said, we haven’t had a superheroine like this. Until recently, we haven’t had many superheroines period, but at least there are a few getting supporting roles in movies and shows. Even of the three comic book-type shows I watch starring a woman, Supergirl is still unique. Agent Carter is more of a spy show, though a very fun one. Jessica Jones was a dark examination of pathos, often great, but “superhero” feels like an inapt descriptor for it. Supergirl, though, never wavered in presenting her as a true throwback hero, like a Christopher Reeve for the modern day. Benoist’s Supergirl is just a truly good person who also happens to kick ass, and I think it’s awesome that we have that — and hopefully will continue to. Just three days after Batman v Superman hit theaters, Supergirl did a crossover team-up episode with Grant Gustin’s Flash coming in, resulting in the most unabashedly delightful episode of television I saw this year. I’m ok (to an extent…) with superhero movies being a bit darker, but it was a wondrous antidote for me to still see a show that was ok with making superheroes actually be FUN.

When I watched the show, I saw both of those things were well-placed. The comics took years to get the modern Supergirl right, but the show did it from the start (to be fair, being able to look at where the comics succeeded and failed probably helped). While I’ve fallen behind on the series, my sister’s a big fan, which makes me really happy, as it means the series has succeeded in at least one of its goals: to bring in new Supergirl fans. I really hope CBS or the CW or someone picks up Supergirl for another season, as I think it’s a show that’s not only good, but important: when’s the last time we’ve seen a superheroine so successfully portrayed in television media?
