Still, in my opinion, it’s very good and well-worth watching. It has a lot of the same charm from the first film that the Lester version kind of scrapped in favor of misplaced (but well-meaning, I suppose) scenes of screwball comedy. While the main story’s mostly the same, a lot– a LOT of the scenes play out very differently in the Donner Cut, from the ways Lois tries to uncover Superman’s secret ID to the significantly more dramatic showdown between Supes and the Phantom Zone criminals. Even the way Supes loses his powers has some key differences that become really, really important when you see how he gets them back. The film’s also very poignant at some parts in ways the Lester version mostly isn’t, particularly in one scene with Superman and Lois that I’m not going to spoil here.

Also? No made-up powers.

Still, I’m not gonna completely rag on the Lester film (minor spoilers ahead). “I believe this is your floor” was fun enough, and I liked seeing Lara (Superman’s mom) get a fairly prominent role. The acting from the main cast is as good as ever; Kidder seems a bit less enthusiastic in this version than in the Donner cut, but still does a pretty good job, especially in the moments right before “the kiss,” where Lois starts to tear up over how she thinks she and Clark are going to hide their relationship. It’s probably my favorite scene in the movie, even if I’m not sure I entirely buy it. Couldn’t have Clark and Lois have just started going out, with Supes adjusting the Clark Kent persona gradually to make it seem more believable? Who knows, maybe the film version of the Daily Planet has strict policies when it comes to dating your coworkers…

And as Andy may recall and the rest of you can learn now, I did not like Superman II. The words “fucking hate” may have been used. But I’m in the minority opinion there; hell, Entertainment Weekly included it prominently in […]
